Oils VS Lotions. What's Best For Your Skin?
July 01, 2017
Despite popular misconception oils can be very beneficial for your skin. In the past oils have received a bad reputation for clogging pores (which has been proven false for most oils) and people with oily skin types tend to shy away from applying them to their skin. Oils can be extremely nourishing, and hydrating for all skin types. European and Asian cultures have been applying oils to their skin since forever, although lotions seem to have been the go-to skincare in Western cultures in the past, but now it seems times-a-changin’.
If you constantly struggle with dry, dehydrated skin even though you smother yourself in moisturising lotions, natural oils may be the ticket to healthy skin you’ve been looking for. When moisturising lotions are applied to the skin, it can be difficult for the active ingredients to penetrate due to the “filler” ingredients within the product. Most (but not all) lotions contain fillers such as wax to bind the water and oil components of the product together. This wax acts as a barrier on the skin, preventing penetration of the active ingredients, and causing product build up on the skin which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
Moisturising lotions also commonly contain harmful chemicals within them, if you read the back of the bottle of your go-to lotion right now, what does the ingredient list say? Probably a bunch of words you don’t understand and some you probably can’t even pronounce! Lotions also contain specific types of preservatives to prevent mould growing inside them due to their water content. There are some preservatives that are 100% natural, but these are rare, so if you don’t know for sure, it’s best to avoid! It is also super important to avoid all products that contain petroleum, that stuff is bad news!
Natural oils on the other hand, hold many benefits and zero harmful chemicals. Plant-based oils are nourishing and hydrating and are usually the active ingredients inside most lotions, although when you choose the pure oil, over a cream or lotion moisturiser, you are eliminating all the junk and dicing straight into the good stuff. Natural oils have been used for centuries (or maybe even longer) to hydrate and soften the skin, they are so effective due to their naturally occurring high levels of antioxidants and nutrients. Due to natural oils being 100% active, they are easily absorbed into the skin, giving you the greatest results in the shortest amount of time, not to mention the health benefits you get from avoiding nasty chemicals.
Have you got oily skin but are too scared to give oils a try? Believe us when we say, oils are not going to clog your pores and make you break out. Natural oils will in fact balance your skin, not only will you find your skin more hydrated, but you will begin to produce less sebum as well (the stuff you find on your face and inside your pores). Still experiencing dry, dehydrated skin despite applying lotions generously? Make the switch to natural oils and let us know once you experience the difference. We love hearing from you babes! Once your skin is getting the love it needs from high quality natural oils, you will have a young, hydrated, healthy looking complexion that truly glows.
Lotions certainly aren’t all bad, but we can stand by the view that they certainly aren’t all good either. Most lotions will moisturise the skin and offer a soothing sensation to dry areas, they are also great for those with sensitive skin as there are many options on the market that target that need. If you do decide to stick to lotions, be sure to purchase natural products that are plant-based, cruelty free and free from harsh chemicals, even go organic where possible.
